Maine’s PFAS law, explained for shoppers

The broadest PFAS product law in the country, phasing toward a near-total ban

Maine passed the first law in the nation aiming to ban intentionally added PFAS from virtually all products. The program phases in over years: certain categories such as carpets, rugs, and fabric treatments went first, with additional categories following and a broad prohibition planned for the early 2030s unless a use is deemed currently unavoidable.

Manufacturers selling into Maine also face reporting duties for products containing intentionally added PFAS.
